LRSAR was formed in 2019 to provide wilderness search and rescue support in the southern White Mountains and Lakes Region of New Hampshire. We operate within and occasionally beyond that territory when needed. LRSAR missions are activated in support of NH Fish & Game, the coordinating agency for search and rescue operations in the state. The New Hampshire Outdoor Council provides a helpful overview of how search and rescue is structured in New Hampshire.
Originally established as a three-season team, LRSAR quickly grew to approximately 70 volunteer members. In 2021, LRSAR added a dedicated winter team capable of responding in our state’s severe winter weather and challenging terrain below treeline and outside avalanche terrain.
LRSAR trains to support Fish & Game search operations in austere wilderness environments. Members train regularly in navigation, communications, patient packaging, litter movement, wilderness first aid, and more. Operational readiness requires ongoing participation, training, and demonstrated field competency to ensure members are prepared to respond safely and effectively throughout the year.
